The Giardino dell’Ottone [Brass Garden] is an outstandingly beautiful historically relevant botanical complex.
The idea of exploiting the embellishing features of botanical species from exotic countries has always been highly fascinating since ancient times. The Egyptians organised long expeditions to seek precious plants.
The Greeks first and, then, the Romans exchanged plants through contacts with various peoples. The Renaissance charged this trend with new impetus; hence, the trend gradually took shape as the geographical horizon expanded.
Spreading the ornamental use of exotic species has characterised the custom of entire generations in Europe.
The Giardino dell’Ottone is a significant example in this context. The Garden stands in Ottone, ca. 3 km from Bagnaia town centre, in the Portoferraio Municipality. It is approx. 400 metres from the sea and stretches for ca 2 hectares.
Currently part of the large camping-village Rosselba le Palme, it can be accessed through an iron gate that opens onto the central avenue. An intricate series of lanes leads to a construction built early in the century to mark the garden's central point.
The garden holds specimens of palms and other exotic plants from the world over, thus creating a highly appealing and suggestive view.
